Surrealism - Exhibition Design

For my first project in final year I decided to focus my attentions on exhibition design. Based on the surrealist short film 'The Flat' I took the surrealism theme and decided to design for an exhibition based on the highly complex and often misunderstood art movement. I conducted huge amounts of research into the movement and decided I wanted the exhibition to not only showcase surrealist pieces but to be a surrealist piece in itself, I wanted the methods of displaying the items and the audience experience to all fit into the Surrealist way of thinking. This caused me many many problems as I went through the design process.

The very nature of designing in itself contradicts true surrealist principles of 'The Automatic'. However I enjoyed the challenge of tackling these problems and finding solutions to work around them.

In the end I was very pleased with my designs. I created a visitor experience where they moved through different parts of the exhibition completing a 'journey' of initiation into surrealism from start to finish. I incorporated many immersive and interactive elements to push the visitor to engage with pieces of art on a new level.

The whole design became all very complicated and it would take me far to long to explain it all to you are here but hopefully you have got the jist of what my project was all about! Here are a few images showing some different examples of different elements of my designs...
